2004  -  ANNIVERSARIES

Once every year, a programme is dedicated to important composer birth/death anniversaries in multiples of 50 years, i.e. 1954, 1904, 1854, 1804... etc.  -  and 2004 is a bumper year...  so much so that there are too many to fit into one programme.  Therefore, a number of composer anniversaries will be covered during some of the other 2004 programmes, as follows:

John Philip Sousa  (1854-1932)
The Bride Elect  -  Ballet: People Who Live In Glass Houses
The Champagnes  ~  The Rhine Wines  ~  White Rock and Psyches  ~  The Whiskies: Scotch, Irish,
Bourbon and Rye  ~  Convention of the Cordials, Wines and Whiskies
People Who Live In Glass Houses was written in 1909, but parts of the work were used as bellet music for a revival of the operetta The Bride Elect in 1923.  The music celebrates the countires from which a series of drinks come.

Recorded on 14 November 1950.  Risurrezione received its first performance 100 years ago on 30 November 1904.

A sera became much more widely known when it metamorphosed into the prelude to the final act of La Wally, the opera with which Catalani had his greatest success..
